悪魔は細部に宿り給う

最近、Jed Rothwell氏の発言をボチボチ読む機会があるのですが、良いこと言ってるなぁと思う事が多く、結構ファンになってます。
「ICCF-15に関する記事(2)」でも紹介したメーリングリストvortex-lに以下のような発言がありました。

正しい理論に従って実践したとしても、間違ったガラス製品は壊れてしまう。自然界は、失敗の原因が設計にあるのか、実践にあるのかを区別しない。飛行機は不味い設計によって墜落するかもしれない。でも、ちゃんと設計された飛行機であっても、エンジンに雁が飛び込んで墜落するかもしれない。

実験科学では、悪魔が細部に宿っているのですよ。

「神は細部に宿り給う」という有名な言葉を意識してのものだと思います。常温核融合のように、実験が理論に先行している科学では、実験に頼る所が大きいため、ちょっとした実験上の不注意や偶然が実験結果やそれを元にした理論構築を台無しにしてしまうのが恐ろしい所ですね。独立した研究機関同士での追試のプロセスを踏んで、実験結果を確認し合いながら進むのが大切なんでしょうね。
